Former Congressman Tom Perriello (D-Albemarle)

It’s game time. We are just days away from another pivotal election, but pundits and reporters are noting a lack of enthusiasm. They’re right, and that’s just plain wrong.

In the past few months, I’ve been doing events with amazing candidates around the state, and I sense that the low energy is finally shifting into deep urgency as progressives and moderates alike shudder at what would happen to our Commonwealth if Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and his Tea Party friends are handed complete reign over Richmond.

But I still hear some folks asking me “what’s the point?”, often citing a disastrous bill that snuck through the State Senate, effectively shutting down access for many Virginia women to the health care they need. If that is what this Senate gives us, they ask, then why is it worth saving? The answer could not be more clear - without Democratic control of the Virginia Senate, that is the kind of disaster we would see every single day the legislature is in session. That procedural mistake, while horrendous, was just a glimpse of what could happen as our great Commonwealth races to the bottom, with Alabama’s attack on immigrants and the churches that help them, Wisconsin’s attacks on educators and first responders, Mississippi’s attack on women’s health, and North Carolina’s assault on the right to vote.

If you want Virginia to look like some dystopian collage of the worst hits from red states across the nation, then stay home. Or forget all the negativity, tivo the football games and spend the weekend knocking doors. There are close races in every corner of the state, so you are not far from a volunteer center that can put you to work. Click here to find a place near you to help out in key Senate races around the Commonwealth.

Democrats only have a small margin in the Senate, and these races are going to be close, so any time you can give will make a huge difference.

Thanks so much for your support!

Saturday’s 23rd Annual Albemarle County Democratic BBQ was a huge success.  Over 300 Democrats turned out to hear from our candidates in this year’s election, including Edd Houck, Creigh Deeds, Cynthia Neff, Christopher Dumler, Connie Brennan, Ned Gallaway and others.

Former DNC Chair Terry McAuliffee and former Congressman Tom Perriello also fired up the crowd for this year’s critical elections – especially holding the Democratic majority in the State Senate and winning a majority for the county Board of Supervisors.

Attendees were entertained by the BBQ Band, comprised of Democrats Marcia Joseph, Maynard Sipe, and Ray Varona.

At the BBQ, the Albemarle Democratic Party presented the Enie Nash Award to former Chair Will Harvey, who has served ably for many years as the chair of the Butler Scholarship committee and as the Democratic appointee on the Albemarle County Electoral Board. He is stepping down from both responsibilities this year.  The 2011 Butler Scholarship winners were also announced.

The Democratic Party also presented a special award to retiring Supervisor from the Scottsville District, Lindsay Dorrier, recognizing him for his thirty years of public service.

A special thanks to Paige McGrath, owner of Lower Sherwood Farm, who graciously hosted the BBQ this year.

And as always, the committee is grateful to our amazing BBQ chefs, who cooked our chicken, pulled pork and beef brisket to perfection: Jeff Sobel, John Loehr, Peter McIntosh, Steve Rose and Elton Oliver.

Check out coverage of the event from NBC 29.

Richmond, VA — Former Virginia Gov. and current Democratic National Committee Chairman Timothy M. Kaine will not announce whether he intends to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Democrat Jim Webb until later in the month or early next month, a DNC official said Thursday.

Brad Woodhouse, communications director for the DNC, said that Kaine will discuss the vacancy at Saturday’s Jefferson-Jackson state Democratic fundraiser in Richmond and thank the many supporters who have encouraged him to run. Then he will take more time to consult with his wife, Anne Holton, and family.

Woodhouse said it is important that people know that Kaine’s is “a very personal decision,” and said the governor “won’t drag it out interminably.”

While Webb and Sen. Mark R. Warner have encouraged Kaine to run, party leaders have said that with 20 months to go before the election, other Virginia Democrats, including former 5th District Rep. Tom Perriello, could emerge as potent statewide candidates capable of winning. Perriello has said he would consider a run if Kaine opts to stay at the DNC.
