Perriello Town Hall MeetingsCongressman Tom Perriello will be holding Town Hall meetings in the Fifth District again this year.to address constituent questions and concerns. There will be two events local to Charlottesville and Albemarle Residents:
If you are interested in being part of a presence (e.g., holding signs) in support of Tom, you can contact Donna Goings: Donna Goings at donnago@cville.net.
Tom Perriello won the $10,000 challenge! The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee offered $10,000 to the campaign that scheduled the most volunteer shifts... over a two-week period... nationwide... and Tom's campaign won, scheduling 527 volunteer shifts throughout the Fifth District! 200 people in Albemarle and Charlottesville signed up for 300 of these shifts... Thanks to all of you, Tom's campaign has an extra $10,000 to spend on field organization efforts. And speaking of field, the campaign is kicking into high gear as the weather heats up. Please contact your district chair or Tracy Del Biaco, the Perriello campaign's regional field director, to sign up for a canvass shift. In addition to organized canvasses that take place every Saturday morning, you can also sign up to canvass on Sundays or on weekday evenings after work. Door-to-door campaigns, where neighbors speak to neighbors about why they are supporting their candidate, have been proven to be the most effective way to reach voters. This is the cornerstone of Tom's "people powered campaign"... to sign up, please email Tracy Del Bianco at tracy@vademocrats.org
People-powered PoliticsMany of you have expressed concern about how the campaign will overcome the millions being spent by corporate interests on negative television advertising. Here's what Tom told a packed room full of Democrats from all over Virginia on Saturday, June 12, "We're finding we can counteract 30 television ads with one 3-minute conversation." Tom is traveling throughout the district, talking with voters, and explaining how the health care bill, the jobs bill, and other legislation is already helping the people of the Fifth District. Tom can't have an individual conversation with each and every voter - but WE can. That's why it's so important to help with canvasses and phone banks. When voters hear what's really going on from their neighbors, they are able to sort out the truth from the lies they hear on TV and radio. It's up to us to counteract the disinformation campaign. Sign up for a volunteer shift with Tracy Del Bianco, Regional Field Director.

Health Care Reform Helping Americans This Year
David Toscano named “Legislative Hero”For the third year, the League of Conservation Voters has named Delegate David Toscano a “Legislative Hero” for his efforts in the General Assembly on behalf of the environment.
Republican Primary ResultsVirginia Republicans selected a career politician, State Senator Robert Hurt, as their nominee to run against 5th District Congressman Tom Perriello. Hurt won the June 7 primary election in a seven-way race that Fox News said drew only "tepid turnouts." Registrars described the turnout as "rather low" and "not overwhelming." Less than 8 percent of registered voters voted in the 5th District Republican primary, according to unofficial results from the State Board of Elections web site. Albemarle County Supervisor Ken Boyd finished 4th in the Republican primary with just 7.37 percent of the votes. Two-thirds of his votes came from Albemarle County itself. Independent Jeff Clark also plans to run as a "Tea Party" candidate in the November election.
Phone Banking OpportunitiesThe Charlottesville/Albemarle Young Democrats are meeting regularly on weekday evenings to phone bank for Tom Perriello. Contact Maggie Thornton for more information.

Board of Supervisors MeetingsNow that there is a majority of Republicans on the BoS, it is all the more important that citizens attend these meetings to let the board members know what we think, and to support our Democratic members. The Board meets on the first Wednesday beginning at 9:00 A.M., and on the second Wednesday beginning at 6:00 pm (though January's second Wednesday meeting is currently scheduled for 9:30 am to 2 pm). All meetings are open to the public.
