CALL TO CAUCUS

2017 58th DISTRICT HOUSE OF DELEGATES CAUCUS

Pursuant to the authority provided by the Virginia Democratic Party Plan, the 58th District House of Delegates Nominating Committee hereby calls an Assembled Caucus to be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 3, 2017, with doors to open at 9:30, a.m. in the auditorium of the Sutherland Middle School, 2801 Powell Creek Drive, Charlottesville, Virginia, 22911.

  1. Incorporated Documents. All appropriate provisions of the Virginia Democratic Party Plan (“State Party Plan”), as amended, are incorporated into this Call by reference and made a part hereof.

  2. Purposes. The sole purpose of the Caucus shall be to nominate a Democratic candidate for 58th District seat in the Virginia House of Delegates in the upcoming General Election to be held on November 7, 2017.

  3. Participation. Participation is open to all registered voters of 58th House District who wish to participate as Democrats regardless of race, sex, age, color, creed, national origin, religion, ethnic identity, sexual orientation, economic status, or disability.

  4. Filing. Any Democrat wishing to be the Democratic nominee for the 58th District House of Delegates must file a declaration of candidacy with the Chair of the 58th District Nominating Committee, or designated representative, by the filing deadline: 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 26, 2017.

  5. Only those candidates who have filed by the deadline will appear on the ballots distributed at the caucuses. The ballots also will include the option to nominate no candidate.  If no more than one person has filed for the office by the deadline, the nominating committee will have the option to cancel the caucus and to nominate the one person who has filed, or to not nominate a candidate.

  6. Declaration. All candidates and all persons participating in the caucuses, shall sign a Declaration form which includes an affirmation that the person is a resident of, and registered to vote in, the district holding the caucus; does not intend to support any candidate who is opposed to the Democratic nominee in the next ensuing general election; is a Democrat; is not a member of any other political party; and has not participated and will not participate in the nominating process of any other political party for the 2017 general election.

  7. Filing fee. The 58th District Nominating Committee has requested a fee for each candidate in the amount of $250.

  8. Rules. The County Caucus shall be governed by the rules developed by the Temporary Rules Committee and rules developed by the permanent Rules Committee and adopted by the Caucus. The Chair shall appoint the members of the Temporary Committees on Credentials and Rules, and shall appoint a convener of each committee. The District Convention shall elect Permanent Committees on Credentials and Rules. Each committee shall be composed of at least 3 members.

  9. Certification of Candidates. Within three days after the caucus, the 58th District Nominating District Chair  shall provide the State Party and the State Board of Elections the name of the nominated candidate.

Candidates wishing to file to run for Democratic nomination for this district must do so by sending notice to include their legal name, official address, office they seek, and pay the $250 filing fee by May 26, 2017, at 5pm. Filing may be made:

  2. By mail to Albemarle Democratic Committee, P.O. Box 5698, Charlottesville, VA 22905. Please note that filing via mail must be RECEIVED by May 26, 2017, not sent. A postmark by May 26, 2017, would not be considered an on time filing.

  3. In person to Chair Stephen Davis or his designee. Please contact chair@albemarledems.org or call 434-260-1592 to arrange this.

A Confirmation of receipt of filing will be made within 24 hours.
