Brunswick CountyBrunswick County, the original home of Brunswick stew and the site of an annual Brunswick Stew cook-off, is located in south-central Virginia on the North Carolina border. It is located halfway between Richmond, Virginia, and Raleigh, North Carolina, two hours from the mountains and two hours from the beach. Interstate 85 bisects the county and Interstate 95 lies just to the east. The county is well served by the Mecklenburg Brunswick Regional Airport (5,000 ft. of runway) and the Lawrenceville-Brunswick Airport (3,200 ft. of runway). Brunswick County is one of the oldest counties in Virginia. It is filled with enchanting history and country delights. From vintage landmarks of the old South to modern recreational facilities - Lawrenceville, the county seat of Brunswick County, was created by an act of the General Assembly in 1814. Legend has it that the town was named after a famous race horse, Lawrence, owned by a large landowner who built a race track near the end of the 18th century. Now, some 180 years later, horse racing has returned with the completion of an Off Tract Betting Center by Colonial Downs in Alberta, near Lawrenceville. The majority of the buildings in Lawrenceville, commercial, residential and governmental, are 19th and early 20th century structures. They are now designated as a National Register Historic District.
